Intermittent Fasting: What and Why?

There are a lot of opinions out there when it comes to diet. Some say to eat six small meals a day, others swear by only eating two which is called intermittent fasting.  Intermittent fasting is going hours without eating, typically anywhere from 12 up to 24. While that may sound like craziness to some, it really isn’t all that long. You go around 12 hours without eating every night due to sleep.

Why do I want to intermittently fast?!

This pattern of eating isn’t limiting how much you eat, it’s limiting when you eat. What intermittently fasting does is allow you to lose fat while keeping on muscle mass. It is one of the best strategies for losing bad weight and keeping on the good weight (muscle) because it requires little change but will result in a big difference.

What happens in my body when I intermittently fast?

When you’ve just eaten (and three to five hours after), your body is digesting and burning the food you just ate, making it impossible to burn through fat. This all has to due with insulin levels, which are high during this time. They don’t lower until eight to twelve hours after you’ve eaten and it’s much easer for your body to burn through fat.  It’s rare we go this long without eating, so our body rarely has the chance to enter this ‘fat burning state’.
